All eyes were on Chloe x Halle as they performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" to kick off the NFL season last night. While doing so, the sisters made sure to bring attention to the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement.
For the performance, Chloe and Halle Bailey wore white T-shirts bearing the images of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor across the front sides, along with jeans and strappy sandals. Both Floyd and Taylor were Black people unjustly murdered by police officers earlier this year—their deaths heavily influencing the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement sweeping across the nation.
Chloe and Halle have both been outspoken on social media regarding the movement and even postponed the release of their album Ungodly Hour earlier this summer in order to take time to grieve the death of Floyd and the other "beautiful Black lives lost."
"When you're trying to release art and music during a time like this, it's very interesting, because you think to yourself, 'Will this be healing? What can I do to use my voice? What can people take out of this? How can this make them feel better?'" said Halle. "I feel like collectively as a Black community, we are all grieving together. During [times like now], music has always been our savior."
