This month marks the launch of Fashion Our Future 2020, a voter registration campaign that unites the fashion industry's most seminal forces with the goal of empowering at least one million first-time voter registrants to head to the polls come November 3.

Studio 189 cofounder Abrima Erwiah kick-started the bipartisan initiative in collaboration with Voto Latino, a political organization launched by fellow Studio 189 cofounder Rosario Dawson and Maria Teresa Kumar. The campaign's website is an expo on voting 101, featuring guides to voting rights, voting eligibility, election dates and deadlines, and voting amid the ongoing pandemic. Users can also expect the rollout of voting-themed merchandise (courtesy of acclaimed designers like Virgil Abloh, Fe Noel, Tanya Taylor, and Victor Glemaud) and digital content and programming, including panels and workshops in partnership with IMG.

"Fashion excites people," Erwiah tells BAZAAR.com. "If we can get your attention through fashion, then we can also share information about what is the most important thing to do this year, which is to vote."

Erwiah says that, earlier this year, she was meditating on the interconnected landscapes of politics and fashion as people across the country flooded the streets in protest of racism and police brutality this past summer. "I think that a lot of times, we disassociate fashion from these moments," she says. "But we're very much linked in every way."

Her eureka moment struck when Dawson, who has thorough experience in voter activism, told her about National Voter Registration Day, which falls on September 22 this year. "Why can't it be an official part of Fashion Week?" Erwiah suggests.

Virgil Abloh of Off-White and Louis Vuitton has also signed on as the campaign's creative director; other notable designer and brand participants include Brandon Maxwell, Prabal Gurung, Mara Hoffman, and Proenza Schouler. Additionally, CFDA, IMG, Maison de Mode, Refinery29, Roswell Studios, The RealReal, and more are listed as partners.

"I am a firm believer that fashion can act as an agent of change," Dawson said in a statement. "As we approach the most critical election of our lifetimes—when the core principles of democracy are at stake—Gen Z, millennials, people of color, Latinx, immigrants, and women will make up the vast majority of eligible voters in 2020. Their voices matter more than ever, and the weight of their collective impact starts with a single action: registering to vote."

"We're not politicians," says Erwiah. "We're just using the power of creativity to help amplify voices."

The fashion industry is powerful and influential. I want to be intentional about using my voice and platform to create change.

Now, with New York Fashion Week in motion, Fashion Our Future, in collaboration with Visa, has debuted an exclusive, limited-edition capsule collection featuring designs by Off-White, Tanya Taylor, Studio 189, and Fe Noel.

“This season, Visa is excited to continue our efforts championing women by collaborating with independent, female designers to produce conscious style accessories and spark conversation about a more inclusive future," says Mary Ann Reilly, Visa's Senior Vice President and Head of North America Marketing. "Fashion is key to self-expression and inspiring change, whether that is shown on a tote, on your mask or on a t-shirt. Our hope is that these items can influence the community to raise a voice this fall and help shape a future of equality and inclusivity.”

Each piece—from a red, white, and blue face mask to "The Right to Tote" tote bag—has been curated with the intention of celebrating the right to vote and women's empowerment. Customers will also be prompted to register to vote at the site's landing page.

"The saying goes, 'You have to be in it to win it,'" Noel says. "The fashion industry is powerful and influential. I want to be intentional about using my voice and platform to create change."

Taylor tells us, "Fashion Our Future 2020 is about celebrating using your voice and being proud to express yourself, so we wanted to make sure we were incorporating those values into our product by letting the wearer customize their own tote."
